Nuclear being touted as a saving grace in a clean energy future. What is really at stake if we widely introduce nuclear into our energy matrix? If we consider the methodology and regulations used to extract, transport, use the fuel, we do not currently have the infrastructure in place to support these processes at scale. When coupled with the history of current uranium mines, spills, and responsibilities to dispose of nuclear waste, we must ask ourselves what is at stake? What are we willing to risk?

Nuclear Power is a dangerous technology, there is genuine and founded intergenerational risk to Country and communities if we roll back laws and regulatory approvals designed to keep people safe. It is crucial to acknowledge that the legitimate concerns of communities have not been taken into account, and that the Opposition fail to understand Indigenous perspectives pleading with the government to keep it in the ground.Much of Australia's vast uranium deposits, the world's largest, are located on the traditional lands of Indigenous Australian communities. Communities need to understand what the risks are of allowing uranium or thorium extraction and associated infrastructure might mean for their lands, water, and their health. Additionally, Australia has been pressured for years to accept the world’s nuclear waste. These waste dumps have been earmarked to be built on land occupied and owned by First Nations people.

It is well documented, that the risks and environmental impacts of extractive industries have often come at a cost to community and Country. While nuclear emits the least amount of emissions: it's the dangers inherent in the extraction, transportation, use as fuel, waste, and the need for permanent storage and the potential for leaks and spills in each of these stages; that puts the health of Country and communities at risk.

Senior Traditional Owner Yvonne Margarula says that with mining: "The promises never last but the problems always do".

There have been many spills without appropriate accountability taken over the last 40 years, it is inevitable that it spills would dramatically increase by opening the country up for extraction and power generation. Communities are also at risk of potentially becoming a military target. The immediate gain of nuclear power leaves a permanent and enduring risk to environmental harm for thousands of generations to come.
