Our Story
Seed is Australia’s first Indigenous youth-led climate network, empowering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people to protect Country, culture, and communities.
Seed launched in 2014 as a semi-autonomous branch of the Australian Youth Climate Coalition and transitioned to become an independent organisation in 2021.
When Seed was launched, there was no national platform for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices within the climate movement. It was established by young mob for young mob to build the power of those most affected to lead the fight to protect Country.
Seed has grown from a small group of First Nations young people into a national grassroots network driving change in communities across the continent and leading campaigns to fight for climate justice. Over the years, we have collaborated with communities and organisations across the continent to achieve significant progress in protecting Country.
Self-Determination
Nothing about us, without us. We centre, value, and advocate for the self-determination of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. We are strong and resilient and we thrive when we set our own course. We have the solutions and we know what’s best for our communities. When First Nations people make decisions on matters that impact us and our Country, everyone can and will benefit.
Connection
Our connection to Country, culture and to one another is what makes us who we are as First Nations people. Culture, cultural strength and cultural values are the foundations of what we do. These connections run deep and form the basis of our grassroots volunteer network and relationships with communities across the continent These connections and knowledge are critical in our collective fight for climate justice.
Justice
We work at the intersection of social and climate justice. Unfair barriers and racist policies have meant that communities are being left behind. We work alongside these communities and together we build the power of those most affected by the climate crisis.
Integrity
Our leadership comes with the responsibility to act with care, transparency, and compassion. We are accountable to our communities, our families, our Country and future generations.
Our vision is for a strong and connected network of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people who will be empowered and leading the fight for climate justice.
We will:
- Work to secure a permanent nationwide ban on fracking, starting with state and territory bans, beginning in the Kimberley.
- Maintain non-partisan support for a just transition away from fossil fuels and will demand investment into First Nations-led climate solutions, ensuring Indigenous leadership will be key in shaping the future of climate action.
- Work with and advocate for frontline communities to be properly resourced for climate adaptation, mitigation, and preparedness, prioritising Northern Australia.
