Caring for Country
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a responsibility to care for Country, which encompasses a deep relationship between people and their environment. It involves managing landscapes in ways that enhance biodiversity, maintain ecosystems, and sustain resources for future generations.
- Solutions
Traditional Ecological Knowledge
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge systems incorporate a deep understanding of biodiversity, seasonal cycles, and natural resources management. First Nations people possess knowledge of the behaviour and patterns of native species, which can guide conservation efforts. For example, knowledge about water management and native plants can enhance resilience to droughts.
Many sacred sites are also critical ecosystems. Protecting these areas often leads to the preservation of biodiversity hotspots, contributing to ecosystem stability and climate resilience. - Solutions
Cultural Burning
Traditional fire management techniques, such as cool, controlled burns, reduce the risk of large, destructive wildfires. These burns also promote biodiversity, stimulate plant growth, and create more resilient ecosystems. This method is used in many places across remote Australia and is now being reintroduced and adapted in places like local councils, private land, National Parks and Regional Fire Service(RFS).

Water Management
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities have long been stewards of Australia’s waterways. They have sustainable methods of managing water resources, vital in a country prone to droughts and floods. Traditional water management practices help maintain healthy aquatic ecosystems, which are crucial for both biodiversity and local communities' sustenance.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities advocate for the protection of water rights and greater control over water management, which often leads to more sustainable and equitable water use and healthier ecosystems.

Research & Rehabilitation
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander solutions to the climate crisis are deeply rooted in sustainability, resilience, and a deep cultural connection to the land. There are many successful ranger programs across the country that incorporate climate research, monitoring, and ecosystem restoration. Our unique perspective offers valuable insights into climate change impacts on the ground. First Nations people are helping to track changes in biodiversity, weather patterns, and ecosystems, providing early warnings of environmental shifts.

Renewable Infrastructure
Communities in remote areas are increasingly adopting solar energy for their power needs. This reduces dependence on diesel generators and cuts carbon emissions. The cost of diesel and the maintenance of generators is expensive in remote communities: paying up to three times as much as those in cities. Many communities are looking at renewables to power their communities and feed back to the grid, this can generate income and increase self-determination.
First Nations Climate Solutions
First Nations people have been caring for Country for thousands of years, are deeply connected to place, and have developed and used Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) to manage the land, water, and climate in sustainable and regenerative ways. By blending this intergenerational wisdom with modern approaches, First Nations communities lead the way in creating climate solutions that protect both the environment and cultural heritage. Embracing these practices is key to building a healthier, more sustainable future for all.
