DON'T FRACK OUR FUTURE
Fracking, short for hydraulic fracturing, is a technique used to extract oil and natural gas from underground rock formations such as shale.
It involves injecting a high-pressure mixture of water, sand, and chemicals into the rock, which creates fractures or cracks, allowing the oil or gas to flow more freely to the wellbore for extraction. This process has significantly expanded the production of oil and natural gas in certain regions .
Fracking poisons water and land, and emits toxic fumes into the air. States across the world have banned fracking because it makes people sick.
Our deserts, springs, plains, and bushland are too precious to risk with dangerous fracking wells. It’ll poison groundwater, pollute the air, destroy sacred sites, and change our seasons.
When our water is polluted by the dangerous fracking process, all of our water is at risk.
In Australia, fracking activities have been primarily focused on regions with significant shale gas and tight gas resources. Some key areas where fracking has taken place or is being considered include:
- Western Australia: The Canning Basin in Western Australia has been identified as a potential area for shale gas exploration and fracking.
- Northern Territory: The Beetaloo Basin in the Northern Territory is an identified hotspot for shale gas exploration and fracking activities.
- Queensland: The Surat Basin and the Bowen Basin in Queensland have seen extensive fracking operations to extract coal seam gas.
- South Australia: The Cooper Basin, located in South Australia and Queensland, has also been a target for unconventional gas extraction through fracking.
These regions have been at the centre of the fracking debate in Australia, with legitimate concerns raised about the environmental, cultural and social impacts of extractive industries on Country.
